The Cetaceans of the Canary Islands are very present in the archipelago all year long. 1/3 of all whale and dolphins species either reside in or pass through Canarian waters.
Canary Islands are located in the subtropical región of West Africa, are of volcanic origin (with great depht a short distance from the coast) and thanks to its ocean position the islands mark the southern limit of distribution for cold-water species, and the norther limit for species of tropical waters.
The great abundance of cetaceans throughout the year in Lanzarote waters, is mainly due to three factors:
- Abundance of food, especially fish and squids and other cephalopods.
- Average water temperature varies between 17ºC. and 24ºC.
- The depth of these waters, wich has an average of 500m, with a máximum depth of about 1500m.
At least 31 species of cetaceans are reported in Canarian archipelago waters.
The most commonly seen whales and dolphins are:
- Bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus)
- Risso’s dolphins (Grampus griseus)
- Pilot whale (Globicephalus macrorhyncus)
- Sperm whale (Physeter macrocephalus)
- Spotted dolphin (Stenella frontalis)
- Striped dolphins (Stenella coeruleoalba)
- Common dolphin (Delphinus delphis)
- Rough-toothed dolphin (Steno bredanensis)
- Bryde’s whale (Balaenoptera edeni)
Most of these species can be appreciated in our Dolphins tour. Contact us if you have any doubts about the dolphin experience in Lanzarote.
